World Anti-Doping Code
World Anti-Doping Code
The World Anti-Doping Code is the fundamental universal document on which the World Anti-Doping Program is based. The purpose of the Code is to promote activities combating doping in sport through universal harmonization of the essential anti-doping elements. It is precise enough to achieve full harmonization on issues where unity is required, while being general enough in other areas to allow flexible implementation of anti-doping rules. The Code is a set of rules defining the athlete’s rights and obligations, sanctions for anti-doping rule violations, and the conduct of proceedings before disciplinary bodies.
Fundamental rationale for the Code
The purpose of anti-doping programs is to preserve what is inherently valuable in sport. This value is often referred to as “the spirit of sport”; it is the essence of Olympism, and a reflection of truth. The spirit of sport is a celebration of the human spirit, body and mind, characterized by the following values:
- Ethics, fair play and honesty
- Health
- Excellence in performance
- Character and education
- Fun and joy
- Teamwork
- Dedication and commitment
- Respect for rules and laws
- Self-respect and respect for other participants
- Courage
- Community and solidarity
Doping is fundamentally contrary to the spirit of sport.
To combat doping by promoting the spirit of sport, the Code requires every anti-doping organization to develop and implement education programs for athletes, including youth, as well as for athlete support personnel.
The World Anti-Doping Code was first adopted in 2003 and went into effect in 2004.
